Converting history into furniture

How do we do it?

Annapolis Maritime Antiques owns the world’s largest collection of authentic World War II Liberty Ship and Victory Ship hatch covers in original condition, which we turn into one-of-a-kind nautical furniture in our own woodworking workshop.

Liberty ship hatch covers become a handsome table and bench dinette set.

Our hatch covers are from two ships, the 1943 SS Zane Grey “Liberty ship” and the 1945 SS Diamond Head “Victory ship”, and come with a certificate of authenticity and brass plaque.

History

Liberty ships were cargo ships built in the United States during World War II to supply the war effort. The hatch covers were on the deck and covered the cargo holds. The half sphere indentations at the corners of the covers are “pick points” for hooks when the covers are moved to and from their positions in rows. Canvas was battened on top of the hatch covers to seal the holds for a water-tight trip across the Atlantic.

From Portland’s Maritime History by Rebecca Harrison and Daniel Cowan: Eighteen American shipyards built 2,710 Liberty ships between 1941 and 1945 – the largest number of ships produced for a single design. Built in the United States just for WWII, the Liberty ship’s design was based on and adapted from a British cargo ship structure. A Victory ship was a particular build to replace those destroyed by German submarines and were larger than Liberty ships and could move fast in the water.
