" Even though this lone dory man may be just a few yards from shore, when the pea-soup fog descends he is in a world of his own. Busy setting his traps, he is ever-mindful of this hazard of the sea and his eyes and ears are constantly on the alert for danger.

In this painting, sure enough a schooner comes out of the mist, feeling her way along the channel, with nothing but the swish of her bow wave to herald her coming. Then does this man of the sea offer up his thanks to St. Elmo, the patron saint of all sailors, for keeping him out of the path of this sea ghost."  -from artist's description
