This exceptional maritime timepiece is an early U.S. Navy-issued 8-day chronometer made by the Waltham Watch Company, one of America’s premier horological manufacturers. Produced around 1918, this chronometer features a 15-jewel, precision-adjusted movement housed in a solid brass case, gimbaled within its original mahogany box.
The clean white dial bears bold Roman numerals, along with three subdials indicating running seconds, power reserve (Up/Down), and the 8-day duration. The dial is signed “Waltham Watch Co.”, with additional markings indicating “8 Days, 15 Jewels, Adjusted” engraved on the movement.
This piece is marked “U.S. Navy 690”, identifying it as a military-issued instrument, likely used for navigational support aboard a U.S. Navy vessel during or just after World War I. The gimbaled suspension allowed it to remain level at sea, essential for accurate timekeeping.
A rare and historically significant example of early 20th-century naval precision, this chronometer remains a beautiful fusion of function, craftsmanship, and military history.
