George Dewey (December 26, 1837 – January 16, 1917) was appointed to Admiral of the Navy in 1903, the only person in US history to have attained the rank. He is best known for his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish American War in April 1898, with the loss of only a single crewman on the American side. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1858.
