This is a U.S. Navy Mark VII Mod 4B Compensating Binnacle, manufactured by E.S. Ritchie & Sons, Inc. of Pembroke, Massachusetts. This binnacle is a protective housing that holds a ship’s main magnetic compass. This particular one is fabricated from solid polished brass with its original spherical iron compensating balls, coated in copper, mounted to either side for correcting magnetic deviation. The interior still contains the large "Ritchie" liquid-filled compass card and the heeling and quadrantal corrector mechanisms. A domed brass hood with viewing window protects the compass, while the maker’s plate on the front reads:

COMPENSATING BINNACLE
MARK VII [N] 48
BUREAU OF NAVIGATION
U.S. NAVY
E.S. RITCHIE & SONS, INC.
1953

This model was standard issue on many mid-century U.S. Navy vessels. The brass body shows typical age-related surface wear and polish marks, with a warm patina that could be left as-is or brought to a high shine. The interior appears complete, including the optical sighting prism and damping system.
