This specialized optical instrument was designed for measuring horizontal and vertical angles in marine navigation, hydrographic surveying, harbor work, and coastal charting. Its compact design made it popular with navigators, surveyors, and maritime professionals during the early to mid-20th century.

The instrument retains its original handle, graduated dial, prism assembly, and adjustment mechanism. The pointer moves smoothly around the scale and the instrument presents well as both a collectible navigation instrument and a display piece.
