This authentic shipboard door sign once hung aboard the USS Stanly (DD-478), a U.S. Navy Fletcher-class destroyer active during World War II. The Wardroom was the officers’ dining and meeting space — a place of high protocol and respect. The bold white stenciled text commands any sailor or visitor to “KNOCK BEFORE ENTERING” — a reminder that rank and etiquette mattered aboard ship.
