U.S. Navy wardroom china plate. The stamp “Homer Laughlin Best China USA XD 1111” is from the Homer Laughlin China Company, one of the biggest American commercial china makers. Their “Best China” line was the vitrified heavy-duty ware made for institutional use (restaurants, hotels, railroads, and especially the U.S. military).

9.75" Diameter

Date code system:

Homer Laughlin used two-letter codes where:

  • The first letter = plant designation (different kilns/factories).

  • The second letter = year of manufacture.

For example:

  • A = 1960, B = 1961, C = 1962, D = 1963, and so on through the alphabet.

So:

  • XD = Plant X, Year 1963.

  • The plate features the U.S. Navy emblem at the top (an eagle with a shield, perched on an anchor).

  • It has a gold and blue trim, which are traditional Navy colors.

  • Such plates were used in the wardroom, the dining area for commissioned officers aboard U.S. Navy ships.

Purpose:

  • These plates were part of the official Navy-issued dinnerware for officers.

  • They reflect the tradition, formality, and pride of naval service, especially in the wardroom where etiquette was important.
